Wheel Fitment Explained: PCD, Offset, Width and Centre Bore

A compatible diameter is only the beginning. Verify bolt pattern, centre bore, width, offset, load rating, brake clearance, hardware, and tyre compatibility.

PCD and centre bore

PCD, often called bolt pattern, describes the number of mounting holes and their pitch-circle diameter. A 5×114.3 wheel has five holes on a 114.3 mm circle. A close-looking pattern is not interchangeable. The centre bore must suit the hub directly or use an approved hub-centric solution.

Width and offset

Wheel width is measured between the tyre bead seats. Offset is the distance between the mounting face and wheel centreline. Together they position the assembly inward toward the suspension and brakes or outward toward the body. The tyre adds its own width and profile, so clearance must be assessed through steering and suspension movement.

Strength, brakes, and hardware

Confirm wheel load rating, brake-caliper clearance, fastener seat type and length, torque procedure, valve or TPMS compatibility, and whether any spacer is approved and legal. Diameter alone cannot prove brake clearance.

Checklist

  • Confirm exact bolt pattern and fasteners.
  • Match centre-bore requirements.
  • Verify width and offset on both sides.
  • Check load rating and brake clearance.
  • Professionally test-fit before mounting.
